A North West Section event
About The Event
Gas Clouds

Kevin Tattersall, Senior Operations and Technical Manager at Future Energy Group, will present at this joint event hosted by the IGEM North West Section, Yorkshire Gas Association (YGA) and the Northern Branch of The Pipeline Industries Guild.

Kevin will deliver a review into a body of work he undertook on behalf of Transco in 1997/8, when he investigated the characteristics of escaping gas at the sites of interference damage to PE gas service pipes. The outcome of this work enabled the formulation and delivery of a safe working procedure for attendance and repair by an individual across Transco.

In the 1990s a massive program of Cable TV installation in the UK led to unprecedented levels of third party damage, particularly to PE Gas Service Pipes. As a consequence Transco’s operating costs were climbing.

The increase in the costs of dealing with a higher level of third party damage coincided with a drive from Ofgas for Transco to significantly reduce its operating expenditure. The two influences were therefore wholly opposed and this led to the need for some radical thinking.

Kevin was able to persuade Transco to carry out company-wide research on the issue and, within 18 months, was able to recommend the use of a safe method of single person working to deal with smaller gas escapes which, in fact, comprised the bulk of interference damage to Transco apparatus. As a result, Transco adopted single person working for these smaller gas escapes and was able to save approximately £4.5m per year in the first two years of rollout.

The presentation will describe the problems, the process of researching the solution and the steps that were taken to implement Single Person Repairs (SPR’s) on damaged PE gas service pipes across Transco, concluding with a brief outline of the post-delivery fall-out from the process.

This review was originally undertaken for the purpose of upgrading IGEM membership to Chartered Engineer through the Technical Report option and the process and experiences of this route will also be included in the presentation.

A finger buffet will be provided from 17:30 with the presentation starting at 18:00.
