Manager of the Year Award

Winner - Claire Edwards of Wales & West Utilities

Claire was recognised for providing consistently excellent customer service which is the bedrock of any successful business. She was responsible for delivering World Class rated customer service, following the development of a customer centric ethos across the whole company, which resulted in Wales & West Utilities being given the highest scores ever in all three of Ofgem’s survey categories. Claire was recognised for demonstrating outstanding management and leadership expertise resulting in exceptional business performance.

Engineer of the Year

Winner - Paul Leighton, Network Integrity Manager of Fulcrum

The judges commented that Paul has consistently demonstrated visible leadership following the initial tender in 2008 to be the Gas Transporter for the newly constructed gas pipeline infrastructure for the 2012 Olympic Games. His engineering capabilities ensured that the project was delivered on time, on budget and to the highest standards despite highly individual engineering challenges.

Winner - National Grid AGI Eakring Project

This winning entry combined the key issues of both Occupational and Process safety, engaging a wide range of stakeholders to produce a world class training environment that has transformed training delivery inside their organisation. With the skills challenges faced by our industry an investment of £6m was central to our winner’s challenge of recruiting, maintaining and inspiring a highly skilled and competent workforce whilst delivering a step change in the way people learn how to avoid safety related incidents.

Winner - National Grid’s Carbon Capture and Storage Project team

With the decarbonisation of our energy networks rightly receiving much attention, the judges recognised that this project has used innovative engineering processes to develop one potential solution. The team have safely drilled the world’s first offshore Carbon Dioxide storage appraisal well and collected data required to confirm the viability of the site, and potentially unlock a ten billion pound industry in the UK.

Customer Service Award

Winner - Scotia Gas Networks

Recognised for constantly striving for excellent customer service, the judges commented on how this year they had applied that approach to an innovative gas supply project. Customer Service was seen as key to the success of the project and is a major factor in ensuring the project objectives are achieved. The feedback from Stakeholders is evidence that Scotia Gas Networks has continued to take customer service to a high level.

Whilst a relative newcomer to the industry. Towngas has demonstrated outstanding growth aligned with the highest standards of safety, governance, ethics and leadership. It’s business has grown as it has secured its’ reputation as “The Gas Expert we Trust” and it now serves approaching 8 million households and businesses enjoying a staggering compound annual growth rate of 20% since 2007.

Oliver was selected for his work in delivering projects that tackle climate change issues, utilising new and innovative processes for remediation of contaminated land.  He has led these projects from concept stage, through development and testing, and onto implementation, gaining much recognition from Defra.

Winner - BG Group Plc

This year’s winner has demonstrated how investing in environmental protection can reduce emissions and can also bring about financial rewards. By spending about 20 million pounds on a total of 50 projects the company has, over a five year period, delivered savings in greenhouse gases of over 1.2 million tonnes along with cost savings of 50 million pounds.

Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions and Solutions for the Planet

Anyone serious about the practice of strategy execution knows you have to go through a few hoops to get it right. From visualising the strategy to delivering the projects needs some key management and communication skills. The winners of this special recognition award have worked together to build meaningful partnerships with secondary schools, communities and industry enabling over 12,000 young people to develop their skills and knowledge plus generate and implement sustainable real life solutions via the Big Ideas concept.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Jeremy Bending, Director of Network Strategy, National Grid

Jeremy’s career in the gas industry began nearly 40 years ago in 1975. He has provided leadership and wise counsel across technical, operational and commercial areas of our industry and has made a huge contribution to the gas industry as we know it today playing a crucial role in the Development Strategy Team from 1992 to 1994. Most recently he successfully lead the National Grid Gas Distribution business through its’ preparations for RIIO, overseeing strategic change and providing a strong platform for the future. Jeremy has consistently contributed not only to the success of National Grid and its’ predecessor companies but to our wider industry, with many prestigious appointments such being Chairman of the International Gas Union and President of IGEM in 2010/11. Jeremy is known to so many people across our industry, indeed he has helped to forge the careers of numerous people, many of whom were at the Awards lunch. His contribution to our industry during an outstanding career has been simply enormous
