Search Before U Dig

Strikes on buried utility assets can be dangerous to individuals and the environment as well as having a financial impact on the companies involved.

Knowing the location of utility assets prior to commencing works can help improve health and safety and reduce time on site. LinesearchbeforeUdig (LSBUD) is a free to use online search service that any individual can use to check their works against over 60 asset owners’ utility assets.

These assets include hundreds of thousands of kilometres of underground and overhead pipes and cables in the electricity, gas, high pressure fuel, water and fibre optic networks. The service processes over 1.75 million enquiries per annum- that’s more than one every 20 seconds. This presentation aims to explain how and why it is important to use a service such as this.

A report by The Utility Strike Avoidance Group (USAG) showed that the total direct costs of reported utility asset strikes for 2014 was approximately £7,000,000 (this was based on an estimated value of £3600 per strike).

A significant conclusion of USAG’s Strike Report is for the need for ‘Better preparation in advance of works commencing, through availability of more accurate plans and more robust location and survey practices’.*

Since 2003 LinesearchbeforeUdig (LSBUD) has been working to address this issue by bringing together asset owners in the UK to improve access to utility location plans. This talk will provide an update on LSBUD’s work to improve the visibility of utility assets and cover the following:

• Their work with industry groups

• Member companies who provide their asset data through LSBUD

• User and search statistics

• Case studies on how asset owners have improved the visibility of their utility locations

A complimentary buffet, sponsored by LinesearchbeforeUdig, will be served from 5:30pm.

*USAG’s Strike Report was published in June 2016 was based on data gathered in 2014 from 24 participants and summarises the key findings of more than 2,000 utility strikes.
