About The Event
Response to an ageing infrastructure: assets and people

An ageing infrastructure is one of the sector's biggest challenges. This applies to the physical assets in the ground and the industry’s workforce.

Organisations are being challenged to provide a reliable, cost effective and ‘future proofed’ provision for end users whilst ensuring that engineering roles are being filled so that the skills, expertise and knowledge of retiring industry specialists can be passed on to the next generation.

This event hosted by the IGEM Welsh Section and Penspen will give insight into how we can address the challenges of an ageing infrastructure in the gas industry.

The event will begin with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Penspen’s training facility, which has been purpose-built to address the skills shortage of technicians in the industry. You will also experience a live demonstration of Penspen’s pressure testing equipment, which is used as part of their training courses.

This will be followed by presentations from Wales & West Utilities and Penspen on how to effectively manage the impacts of ageing assets and how to create a sustainable, competent workforce.

The evening will include:

  • A tour of Penspen's training facility in Neath
  • Presentation from Grant Rogers, Asset Integrity Manager for Wales & West Utilities
  • Presentation from Robert Lawson, Regional Director of Europe for Penspen
  • Question and answer session
  • Refreshments and buffet

Presentations

Grant Rogers, Asset Integrity Manager for Wales & West Utilities

Title: “Managing ageing assets today with an eye on the needs of tomorrow's energy network”

Hear how Wales & West Utilities’ Asset Management Strategy and workload delivery has changed over the last decade in response to the RIIO regulatory framework, and the challenges ahead for the gas network as part of an ever more integrated energy delivery system.

Robert Lawson, Regional Director of Europe for Penspen

We will be discussing the challenges presented by ageing infrastructure in the gas industry. This includes ageing assets and an ageing UK workforce.

The presentation looks at the challenges and opportunities of repairing ageing assets, as well as discussing the impacts of the introduction of RIIO.

In order to meet the needs of networks, Penspen provide in-house technical training, which will help to bridge the skills gap created by an ageing workforce. The presentation will offer an insight into how training and education can help to improve workplace retention and improve knowledge transfer.
